Starring as Carmen is Carolyn Sproule, an attention magnet from the moment she appears onstage amid a gaggle of fellow cigar-factory workers. Director Rob Ashford, who also helmed HGO’s 2014 production, coaxes engrossing performances from the principal cast - almost all of whom are either HGO Studio students or alumni - and ravishing choreography from the corps of dancers, one of whom cavorts across the stage clad in a bull’s head from time to time. It’s not like she doesn’t warn them during her famous “Habanera” aria: “If I love you, beware!”Įither way, this co-production with Lyric Opera of Chicago, onstage at the Wortham Center through Nov. Certainly she’s crystal-clear on that point, so the poor saps who fall under her spell more or less have it coming.
